IRAQI, U.S GRUNTS FIND BIGTIME PILE OF GUNS N' AMMO
October 13, 2005 MOSUL, Iraq – Iraqi and Task Force Freedom soldiers seized a large weapons cache in Rawah Oct. 11. Iraqi Intervention Forces from 3rd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st Division and U.S. Soldiers from 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment seized the cache consisting of 220 rocket propelled grenades, 40,000 7.62 mm rockets, 100 2.75 inch rockets, 10 anti-tank mines, 1,000 .50 caliber rounds, 30-120 mm mortars, 20-82 mm mortars, 3,000 feet of detonation cord, 12-40 pound containers of black powder and 25-40 pound containers of red powder. Thanks to the diligence and innovation of a Soldier they were able to get on site excavation equipment operational and uncover the munitions. The cache was found buried in the ground in a 20 ft. container. The contents were destroyed in place. More rounds were discovered in the surrounding area after the cache was destroyed. As of Oct. 12, more than 1,000 122-mm artillery rounds have been found, 700 of which were destroyed in place. Iraqi and U.S. forces continue to search for additional munitions. Weblog LINK |
